Semiconductor chips are made up of two parts: a P-type semiconductor, in which holes dominate, and an N-type semiconductor, on which electrons dominate. But when the two semiconductors are connected, they form a p-N junction between them. When an electric current is applied to the chip through a wire, electrons are pushed towards the P region, where they combine with the holes and emit energy as photons, which is how leds emit light. And the wavelength of light, the color of light, is determined by the material that forms the P-N junction.
Leds can directly emit red, yellow, blue, green, cyan, orange, purple and white light.
At first, LED was used as the indicator light source of instruments. Later, LED of various light colors was widely used in traffic signal lights and large-area display screens, which produced good economic and social benefits. The 12-inch red traffic light, for example, is a long-lived, low-light-performance 140-watt incandescent lamp that produces 2,000 lumens of white light in the United States. After passing through a red filter, the light is lost by 90%, leaving only 200 lumens of red light. In the new design, 18 red LED lights, including circuit losses, consume 14 watts of power to produce the same effect. Automobile signal lamp is also an important field of LED light source application.
To general illume character, people needs white illuminant more. In 1998, LED emitting white light was successfully developed. This LED is made of GaN chip and yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) package together. The GaN chip emits blue light (λp=465nm, Wd=30nm), and the YAG phosphor containing Ce3+ produced by high temperature sintering emits yellow light after excited by this blue light, with a peak value of 550nLED lamp M. The blue LED substrate is installed in a bowl-shaped reflecting chamber and covered with a thin layer of resin mixed with YAG, approximately 200-500nm. Part of the blue light emitted by the LED substrate is absorbed by the phosphor, and part of the blue light is mixed with the yellow light emitted by the phosphor to produce white light.
For InGaN/YAG white LED, by changing the chemical composition of YAG phosphor and adjusting the thickness of phosphor layer, the color temperature of 3500-10000K white light can be obtained. This method of obtaining white light through blue LED has simple structure, low cost and high technology maturity, so it is most used.
