Security Tips: Fiber Transmission Rate and Corresponding Transmission Distance

September 19, 2023

In daily life, optical fiber is used as a long-distance information transmission because the conduction loss of light on the optical fiber is much lower than the loss of electricity conduction on the electric wire. In general, the terms optical fiber and optical fiber cable will be confused. Most optical fibers must be covered by several layers of protective structures before use. The covered cables are called optical cables. The outer protective structure of optical fibers prevents the surrounding environment from being affected by optical fibers. Damage, such as water, fire, electric shock, etc. Fiber optic cable is divided into: optical fiber, buffer layer and drape. Optical fiber and coaxial cable are similar, but there is no mesh shielding layer. The center is a light-transmitting glass core.

The fine fiber is encapsulated in a plastic sheath so that it can bend without breaking. Typically, an emitting device at one end of an optical fiber uses a light emitting diode (LED) or a laser to transmit light pulses to the fiber, and a receiving device at the other end of the fiber uses a photosensitive element to detect pulses.

In a multimode optical fiber, the diameter of the core is 15 μm to 50 μm, roughly equivalent to the thickness of human hair. The single-mode fiber core has a diameter of 8 μm to 10 μm. The core is surrounded by a glass envelope with a lower index of refraction than the core to keep the light inside the core. On the outside is a thin plastic jacket that protects the envelope. Optical fibers are usually bundled and protected by outer shells.

The core is usually a double-concentric cylinder made of quartz glass with a small cross-sectional area. It is brittle and easy to break, and therefore requires a protective layer. The following describes the optical fiber transmission rate and transmission distance:

1: Transmission rate 1Gb/s, 850nm

a, ordinary 50μm multimode fiber transmission distance 550m

b. Ordinary 62.5μm multimode fiber transmission distance 275m

c. New 50μm multimode fiber transmission distance 1100m

2: Transmission rate 10Gb/s, 850nm

a、Ordinary 50μm multimode fiber transmission distance 250m

b. Ordinary 62.5μm multimode fiber transmission distance 100m

c. New 50μm multimode fiber transmission distance 550m

3: Transmission rate 2.5Gb/s, 1550nm

a, g.652 single-mode optical fiber transmission distance 100km

b、g.655 single mode fiber transmission distance 390km (ofstruewave)

4: Transmission rate 10Gb/s, 1550nm

a, g.652 single-mode optical fiber transmission distance 60km

b, g.655 single mode fiber transmission distance 240km (ofstruewave)

5: Transmission rate at 40Gb/s, 1550nm

a, g.652 single-mode optical fiber transmission distance 4km

b, g.655 single mode fiber transmission distance 16km (ofstruewave)
